THE Vintage Sporting Car Club came to Narrogin last week to discuss 50th anniversary
celebrations of the Australian Grand Prix planned for November this year.
Club event co-ordinator Syd Sunter-Smith met the Narrogin committee
planning the event after it was chosen to run the grand prix.
The club has experience in "round the houses" type events in York, Northam
and Albany and in Narrogin between 1988 and 1992.
"The V.S.C.C. are aware of the significance of the 195 1 Australian Grand
Prix to Narrogin and have been very keen to put on the 50th anniversary reinactment
right from the onset," committee member Bob Duddington said.
Fifty years ago on March 5, 1951 Narrogin was host to the first ever Australian
Grand Prix to be held in WA.
Not only was it the first time a grand prix had been held in WA, it was
also held as part of the Australia-wide celebrations to mark 50 years since
federation.
"It's the historic significance which makes this reinactment so important
to Narrogin," Mr Duddington said.
"No other town in WA can claim to have held the Australian Grand Prix
and now to top it off we have the 50th anniversary event in the centennial year
of federation."
The event will be held on November 25 and will be supported by up to 25
other events for classic sport and racing cars.
The committee hopes to include events for historic motorcycles and midget
racers.
The organisers also plan to run a standing quarter mile sprint and a hill
climb event on the Saturday.
The grand prix weekend will complete the full Narrogin Race Week of events
which will start with the Rev Heads weekend on November 17 and 18.

Cr. Don Ennis on 98814309 or Bob Duddington on 0417 953 787.
