"Same old dirt, same old bikes, same old fun"

The Vintage Motorcross Club of W.A. (VMCWA) is the leading body actively promoting Vintage Motorcross Racing in this state. The club runs a full winter calendar from March through to October. The tracks used include a natural terrain track and some already established 70's era tracks, suited to VMX racing. The racing is low key and the emphasis is on restoring, riding and enjoying your Vintage Machinery.
Introducing the sport to Western Australia in 1995 the Vintage Motorcross Club of W.A. set out to recreate the sights, sounds, smell and camaraderie of Western Australia "golden years of Motorcross" - the 60's and 70's. The underlying theme in Vintage Motorcross is "the spirit of the era". You won't find any modern "obstacles" on a VMX track, but you will find mud, dirt, dust, hills and a group of riders who love the sport and the bikes they ride.

Vintage Motorcross is for Bikes built before 1975

If you own a trail or dirt bike, solo or sidecar built before December 31st 1974, with no more than 7" front wheel travel and 4" rear wheel travel, then it's eligible for Vintage Motorcross. (Pictures of some of the bikes at the Narrogin event on 20th May 2001).

HOW TO GET STARTED?

It's easy ..... VMX is low cost, low key, 100% fun!

    1. only $40.00 for the full one year membership,
    2. $10 for associate (non riding) membership
    3. $5 for a one day member (to ride on a club day only)
  2. Obtain the appropriate licence from MAWA (see further on)
  3. Buy or build a suitable bike
  4. Get into shape??!
  5. Buy the necessary protective clothing - helmet, boots, pants, stubby holder, etc.,
  6. "Take it out, get it dirty and have some fun"
  7. Go home and tell your friends and family how fast you were. Even "after all these years".

Every month our own club newsletter is published and sent to all club members informing everyone of the latest news and coming events. Advertising is free to club members and if you need anything (from a lobotomised sidecar passenger to a 3 speed Qaiff for your BSA), this is the ideal place to do it. Our Editor is more than happy to run any type of ad (with the right kind of bribe of course).
The riding attire is standard fare: Approved helmet (AS1698 or similar approval), riding pants (leathers or nylons), sturdy boots of full ankle protection type, gloves and full sleeve riding shirt. Some riding attire is available through the club at cheap prices - check the newsletter for details. Second hand gear is readily available around the place at reasonable prices.

Racing, Fitness and Health:

No one's as fit as they were 10 (or 20 or 30!) years ago, but don't let that put you off. Before you start racing it's wise to do a little riding to get into shape. You know, gears on the left... or is it the right? That sort of thing. Don't forget to mention to your doctor when you are getting your next check-up, that you are going racing - he may want to come too!

Licences:

Like all things that are fun, you need a licence to do it! There are 2 type of riding licences available to you. The Open Competition Licence - this enables you to compete at all levels of competition , from VMXC club days to national championship events. The cost - approximately $150.00 per year (from payment date), payable to Motorcycling Australia W.A. (M.A.W.A.). If you intend to do a lot of riding, and/or compete at open events, this is the way to go.
The One day Licence - enable you to compete at a club run event for that day only. The cost - $27.00 per day. These are purchased from the VMCWA on the day of racing. For only a couple of rides per year this is the cheaper option. The cost of both of these licences also includes insurance for yourself - just in case!
