When I first moved in, one of the things that had been picked up on the survey
was that the plot was about 2ft higher than next door and that the garden was
supported solely by a palin fence.
Rather than let the fence eventually rot away and the garden slide into next
door steps had to be taken! Initially this consisted of digging a trench exposing
the fence, with a sloping side which was covered in old plastic pallets. This
worked well for a couple of years but eventually started to collapse and a more
permanent solution had to be found.
The trench was deepened to below the level of the fence and filled with concrete
to the fence bottom.
This turned out to be such a task that it was completed in two stages
with 2 deliveries of concrete for the footings. Garry & Mel joined
me for the first pouring session.
Once the concrete had hardened breize-blocks were laid to ground level and
then the garden back-filled.
Once the the wall was completed, I added some beams to run the shade cloth
to the fence, added more plants and moved the hammock in!
