Peg - another Border Collie from a farm. This time near Wellow, Nottinghamshire. A lovely looking dog with the usual affectionate and intelligent character. We had her mated with a lovely working dog and she had a lovely litter of 6 puppies. One of these we kept and called Belle. Peg was Mels dog and Belle, Joans. They were a real pair - Peg had one bad habit - she would go walk abouts and could stay out all night but she was always there in the morning anxious to be let in. She tried hard to teach Belle these bad habits but fate separated mother and daughter. When we emigrated, finance limited us to taking only one dog and it was only sensible to take the younger. Peg however went to live with a very good friend of ours and hers, Freda Rosamund. Peg continued her walkabouts for a time, and one memorable night she left her new home in Carlton, Nottingham, and made her way back to her old home in Arnold. A considerable walk of several miles across suburbs, which she had only traveled before by car. The homing instinct of a dog remains a mystery. We saw her several times on our visits home and she was always pleased to see us. She died only a week after our last visit with her, we know she had had a long and happy life.
